Are you marketing enough, my guess is a big NO!

Sure you run some ads in your local paper, have a radio spot and have that awesome advertisement on TV, but have you marketed lately?

Here is my marketing tip of the week, “Get out and know them.”  Get out and know your customers.  I don’t care if you are a CEO of a fortune 500 company or just starting a company, you need to take a ‘time out’ from your day to day and get to know the people you so ‘nicely’ want to slam your product to.

Here are some ideas on how you can interact with your current and future customers:

  1. Get out on the sales floor – see how your customers see your floor and see how your sales team is really doing
  2. Turn off the computer, pull out your phone and randomly select a client in your address book to take to lunch.  Don’t sell them while at lunch just ask them some questions.
  3. Block out 1 hour a week and call a few clients just to chat, not to sell, but just see how things are going.  Spend no more then 5 minutes on the phone with each client.
  4. Send a tweet and then reply.  Ask a question to your followers and then spend 30 mins and reply to them
  5. Spend some time at your competitors shop.  Yep.  Go see how they are doing things and see if you can learn from anything.  Don’t be all sneaky about it or rude.  I promise they have been to your business too.
  6. Get your web team to ( or you ) and draft up an email to send to all your past clients ( keep it under 300 words ) Ask them why they chose your firm or company.
  7. Talk to neighborhood.  See how other business owners in your neck of the woods are doing.
  8. Network in your local area.  This means you need to get out and meet new people.  If you are a B2B then business folks, if you need to sell the general public then find your public and network with them.
  9. Support a fundraiser, but don’t just give money, donate your time and get to the know the people that run it and support it.
  10. Start a real Q&A service in your business.  Not a static web page, but a fully functional question and answers service.  Key to this is to answer the questions you get.  FaceBook, the web or Twitter are easy ways to do this.

Now I know you can’t do all of these things and some will not work for your type of business.  The point is get out there and meet your customers and those customers, I promise, you will lead you to new customers.  The point of marketing is not to advertiser, it is to get to know your clientele/customers.  This will make your advertising so much more successful, I guarantee it!
