So after 17 years of business I can truly say that what I am about to share with you, is the most exciting project I have ever worked on.

After months and months of work I would like to present to you Media Lemur. For the first time in the world’s history print can truly become digital and not just a PDF, website or screen shot of print editions. This won’t be a ‘flip book’ or a flash plug in, Media Lemur is a full feature digital creator.

The secret? No software to install, no need to change the culture or processes of print production and best of all it won’t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce. Magazines, newspapers or any type of print publication will be able to use Media Lemur.

Media Lemur was built on the three principles to create digital success: Rich Media Content, Track-ability of User Interaction and Social Integration.

Media Lemur gives any publisher the ability to create interactive, rich digital content. We have begun launching Media Lemur in Utah and have already fully penetrated the market place.

How big is Media Lemur? Time for some boldness; Media Lemur will be the key player in creating and generating profits for the struggling print world. Don’t believe me, stay tuned.

More information to come on Media Lemur

So this week we had another player enter the digital media world, WIRED. How did they do in this humble marketer’s opinion? I give it a two out of five stars. It is an okay start, but honestly coming from a leader in the geek world I truly expected more from WIRED.

They did nail down the rich media content, but the delivery of the content was still laced with the feel of print and not the feel of digital freedom. The ads are nothing more then copies from the print addition and lack zero capabilities of tracking success or impact. The navigation of content is basic and lacks natural user interaction. All and all the app is not worth the $4.99 price tag. I hope it is a first step for WIRED and they look to strip away the print limitations and change the price point delivery system. Only time will tell.

So what makes a good digital magazine and why am I so hard on all these guys? I will answer the latter question first. I expect more from companies that have budgets that are deep, brand penetration and have openly announced they have been planning these apps for the past year. Spending upwards of $100,000 just to produce one issue and 10 to 20 people working on each issue. Then in the end we get glorified PDF’s or an untraditional digital experience. I get just a bit frustrated, but again it leaves the door wide open for the little guy.

With that said now I will give the three keys needed to making digital media content successful. I won’t give away all the ‘how to’s’, but I will outline the basics.

Rich Media Content: This seems to be the obvious and simplest of the tasks. Creating content and rich media content should be a no brainer, a 1, 2, 3, type of deal for these companies. Sadly it just is not the case. For years publishers have mastered the art of ‘less is more’ and working in the realms of print restrictions. Now we are telling them to abandoned what they have thought, trained and done for centuries. This process is more of a culture change then anything else. It will take time, but it is key to the success of digital media. ( more to come on what exactly Rich Media content really is, in a future blog )

Track-ability of User Interaction: One of the greatest advantages to going digital is the ability to track not only the ads, but the content as well. Now publishers can rely on more than just letters and casual conversations about their content’s success, they can get hard cold facts. What do readers like? What don’t they like? Was the cover story the right story? What content was the most popular, what content was interacted with the most? All of these can now be answered. Advertisers can now track their print ads much like they do for online ads. Ad delivery becomes a whole new ball game and everyone benefits, the users, the publishers and the advertisers.

Social Integration: What are we as a society if we don’t share? We are nothing and the same fate befalls digital media. It is truly worthless if you can’t share it. We have to remember that not EVERYONE owns a tablet or a portable media device…but odds are they have access to some type of internet connection. This means that if I am reading the latest digital news story I can quickly share it to my social community. In turn they can share it to theirs and so on. Now the digital content is no longer ‘just’ on my device, but it has spread to thousands and do this enough times with the right content and users will pony up and get into the portable media revolution. As a note this does not mean that ALL content needs to be shared in an open platform. There are many ways to protect the publishers content and still share the experience.

Now these are just the building blocks. Of-course there are other issues to address such as; Pricing, UI design, Flow, Gesture control, Speed and Delivery. The three keys above are what is minimally required to truly compete in the digital media market place.

If you are interested here are the links to the ‘top’ digital magazines out right now:

WIRED ( 2 out of 5 stars )

TIME ( 2.5 out of 5 stars )

I came across an article about the new GQ iPad magazine app from Appleinsider.com and it got me thinking. The article focuses on the fact that GQ has only sold 365 copies of their iPad magazine in a month and a half since the iPad has been out. Wow! Out of a million plus possible consumers GQ has only managed to get 365 downloads, really? Is this a sign that digital magazines are doomed? Not even close.

My favorite piece from the article is the statement made by Pete Hunsigner ( the VP of GQ )

“…the iPad edition costs (my) magazine nothing, and (I) believe that the sales will become more significant in the future. This costs us nothing extra, no printing or postage,” he said. “Everything is profit, and I look forward to the time when iPad issue sales become a major component to our circulation.”

Pete, I don’t know you, but I want to shake some sense into you. You are the VP of GQ, the fashion mag for men, the empire of class, the top ship and yet your venture into the digital magazine world has been pedestrian and laced with laziness and fear. There is no doubt as to why the GQ magazine has only produced a weak 365 downloads—it is nothing more then a PDF.

A week ago I wrote about how it is time to take the digital distribution world seriously and this is exactly why. The big companies are relying on their name, not progressive thinking and foresight. They are proving to be lazy and weak. They operate on the ‘build it and they will come’ mentality and in the 21th century that will not fly. Actions being shown by the ‘big boys’ is exactly why the there will be a digital revolution and smaller more progressive companies will take the lead and change the face of ‘print’ forever.

How can you benefit? Two ways. As a business owner this is your time to shine. If you own a ‘small’ publication now is the time to take the leap and build your digital strong hold. As a consumer you hold the cards. You have already told GQ where to take their PDF’s, so now demand your feature sets. What do you want to see in digital content media? Where do you want it to take you? You are the driver—so drive.

2011 will be the year of digital media—either you will be leading the way or following. Where will you be?

With all the hype about social ‘this and that’, websites and portable digital media, have we just abandoned talking about all ‘traditional’ forms of distribution and media? I am referencing that big square box called your TV and about those print newspapers and magazines you have lying around. It seems the only reason people will talk about the ‘big box’ is if it has to do with 3-D technology. Or the only reason print is mentioned is to say how it is going to be destroyed by digital content—well let’s change that!

Your traditional medias are strong and while they may not completely rule the headlines, they still rule living rooms, bathrooms and doctors offices all around the world. This means as a business owner you can’t jump ship and not focus on the bread and butter of advertising. Example, last night my wife and I were watching American Idol and there was Apple and it’s iPad.

Apple launched a new media campaign showing the iPad in the real world, running apps and trying to convince the masses to ‘buy one’. So the king of the headlines ( the iPad ) is using the grandfather of media distribution to spread the word—yes, your business needs to use grandpa too.

Now lets look at great grandpa, print media. Yes it is understood that print medias are hurting and readership is down, but the asterix here is that readership is down due to the fact that at one time the only way to get the news was in print. Now we have several different ways to gather information, thus readership in one is down and up in another.

With that said there are still A LOT of human eyes reading print media and they will be for at least the next 10 years. Example number two. A few months ago the New York Jets traded away their number one running back to the Kansas City Chiefs. This had the makings of a PR nightmare for the team and an ethical one as well. So what did they do? They, the New York Jets, took out a full page add in the Kansas City newspaper to thank him for all he had done as a Jet. Could of they of blogged about it? Yes and they did, but the impact of that print ad was so well received add read by thousands of fans which shared it with hundred of thousands of people. Print is in no way dead, it is just not the same as it once was.

So in all the hype about social media, blogs, FaceBook, Twitter and so on, don’t forget about the ‘dinosaurs’ of advertising and marketing. They may not be as giant as they once were, but their impact and reach is still too great to ignore. The true trick is to use the hype in combination with tradition to create unprecedented results. Need to know how?

Let it begin… One of our newest projects is only days away from being launched and this is one for the ages!

Take an iPad and two iPhones, lay them on the table what do you see? What we saw was a ‘game board’ and two ‘controllers’. That led us to our first of a line of apps using both the iPhone and the iPad. The app is ping pong and we call it Ping Pong Battle.

The game is simple in concept; the iPhones are your paddles and the iPad is the ping pong table. Your start up the iPad and connect your iPhones via bluetooth and away you go! Now you have a portable digital ping pong table anywhere you go. Sounds are used to judge the ‘hit’ which means that even if you, for some reason, can’t see the ping pong coming at you on the iPad you will hear the sound of the ball flying at you in your iPhone. This makes for true surround sound as well. Your iPad and both iPhones are emitting sounds giving you a fast and accurate gaming experience like non other on portable gaming devices.

Now you can play the game with just the iPad, all though where is the real fun in that? This game was designed for social activity and was designed to be played anywhere, any time, any way. Don’t believe me? Check out our quick promo video out:

Now we aren’t leaving out those of you without an iPad. After the first release of Ping Pong Battle, we will be releasing an iPhone version that will allow you to take 3 iPhones and play the game. Using 1 iPhone as the table and the other 2 as the controllers or just using the 1 iPhone as the table and controller. Both the iPhone and iPad table will support video out for displaying the game on big screens, projectors or any other screen device you have around.

One last thing I want to divulge. In the game play you will be able to unlock new tables and new paddles. The new paddles will give you increased hitting power and unlock new combo moves. The tables we let you play ping pong in your style. More and more boards and paddles will be released as the app ‘grows up’. ( Check out the Ping Pong Battle website to learn how you can get your paddle and table designs in the next release. )

Take a look at the tables ( the paddles we are keeping under lock and key until the app is launched ). Also included are screen shots of the game.

The iPad app will be priced at $4.99 and the iPhone paddle app will be free. The app will be a ‘binary app’ in the second release which means if you buy it for your iPad you will not have to re-buy it for your iPhone.

Welcome to 2011 the year of digital content. Okay so it isn’t 2011 yet, but for all intents and purposes it is in this marketers world.

So why is 2011 the year of digital content, simply put it is because 2010 has been and will be the year of digital hardware. Devices that were once just concepts, like the iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets are becoming realities each and every day. For the first time in the world’s history we have the hardware to finally adapt to an all digital delivery system.

Who reading this blog reads your local newspaper? If you do is it just on Sunday’s? Do you read the paper or do you look at one or two sections? Who has subscriptions to magazines and is frustrated that by the time you get the magazine in your hands the data or content is old news or not in-depth like you were hoping? This in turn leads you to turn to the web ( aka digital content ) and dig deeper.

Let me be bold and say that by the end of 2010 we will see an explosion of small magazines and news outlets take to digital delivery. This means that by the end of the first quarter of 2011 we will have a whole new revenue source and advertising media. For the first time print will be able to track ads, create documentable conversions all the while staying ‘Print’.

Before I get blasted on facebook and twitter I understand that yes there have been digital copies of magazines and newspapers ( PDF’s and websites ) but no one has perfected it nor have then had the hardware to deliver it on. Now in 2010 we do and we will have even more as the year moves forward.

A few facts for you, so far:

There are over 1 million iPads already sold ( wouldn’t you love to have 1 million readers… )

51 companies have send they are building iPad killers

3 major players have already committed to have tablets out by the end or 2010

Newspapers have seen a 65% decrease in subscriptions globally, while independent bloggers have seen a 165% increase

World Wide Web traffic has increased year of year

1 in 3 cell phone users have internet enabled

Some of the benefits of digital:

Content can be delivered at half the price

Once it is built production cost is non existent

Content can be delivered to the end users with in minutes not days or weeks

Content can be interactive and rich

Content can be shared socially instantly and effectively

Trackable advertising and readership ( this a HUGE step forward )

We have not seen the digital age even take off yet. You can chose to wait or you can chose to be a part of it, either way you go it is coming and coming fast.

Here is one company that gets it and this is what we have to look forward to. These ideas and techniques will get perfected over time, but this is where we need to start.

In redesigning my website I took the time to go back through a few blog posts and I found that on December 31st, 2009 I took a look back at the iPhone and the app world surrounding it. I wanted change in the mobile App world and it looks like that change is finally happening. 2009 was a big year for the app world and the iPhone in general ( Apple included ), but 2010 has quickly began to show us just what potential the app world really has.

In reading my post, “What We’ve Learned From the App World in 2009” I pointed out the do’s and don’ts for the app world to see continued success and to take the app world to a whole new level.

The ‘do nots’ that I pointed out were; no free apps, the way ads where integrated in apps need to change and don’t wait to market you app AFTER it is in the app store. Well, well it is has if the world listened to me. ( okay it probably wasn’t just me, but it makes me feel good thinking they did. )

At the time of me writing the “What We’ve Learned From the App World in 2009” post the average price of an app in the Apple App store was $1.29, now the average price of an app is $2.79. What does this mean? Less and less apps are free and if they are free they are ‘Lite’ or ‘Demo’ versions of the app that have all the real ‘features’. As I stated before you can not build quality on free, nor can you as the consumer demand high end feature sets when the developer can’t pay the cost of development. Another trend that is working is ‘in app’ purchases. This is driving free apps to add game changing features in their apps that require a purchase inside of the app. A huge success for this is We Rule from Ngmoco. Even I and Kevin Rose have fallen into the trap of We Rule

Now the ads. Oh how they stunk in 2009. No one had answers, stats were a joke and profits? They were far and few between. Nothing much to take to the bank. All of this is soon to change with iAds from Apple.

Demo here:

iAds is long over due and regardless of who brought it to the mobile platform first, in this case Apple, it will be successful. Why? Interaction, data and use of the platform.

Now the only thing that iAds does not do at this point is add the ‘sneaky’ piece to advertising success. Yes the iAds are fun, interactive and look amazing, but they are not something that someone will stop racing down the track and look at. We do need to see more sponsorships in ads and games that utilize the users already focused attention in the games or utilities. A few apps are working on this and will see success if implemented correctly. With iAds though ads in 2010 will go to a whole new level and will finally see some well deserved success. iAds is scheduled to launch in June.

Marketing of apps have taken a complete 180 turn from the strategies used in 2009. Developers are not just putting the app in the store and hoping for the best, they are now working with news media, marketing firms, facebook and twitter to blast out the app long before it is released in the app store. Developers are using blogs and demo to create buzz for an app. They are also using already successful apps in the app store to push their newest invention to the masses. All and all the marketing of apps has seen the biggest improvement from year over year.

There is a natural reason for this; more apps. We have gone from 115,000 apps at the end of 2009 to 185,000 apps at the beginning of April 2010 ( not counting iPad apps ). That is a huge jump in less then 4 months. Developers know that to survive in the app space they need to create brand and awareness of their products.

We are only 4 months into 2010 and already we have seen some amazing developments in the world of mobile technology. Just think what the next 4 months will be like.

In January there were just 15,000 apps out there and now as of the 16th of December there are over 115,000 apps and 2,000,000,000+ downloads! That is a insane growth! Growth that can not even begin to be controlled or profitable! Growth in the App Store is so out of control that no one has public numbers, including Apple, that tell us all we want to know. For example out of the 115,000 apps how many are free? How many are over 4MB? How many downloads has each app gotten in the last 30 days? These numbers would make our lives so much easier and would make being a developer 10 times more effective. As it is ,it is a big guessing game!

So we guess and in guessing we hope. An example ‘guess’ ( a fairly good one at that ) is that the top apps in the App Store’s top 25 get around 50 to 60 thousand downloads a day. This guess was calculated in late August, so you can see based on the numbers above it may be a bit higher now. With this information all developers love to run a fun little equation: “If we can have the number 1 app that is like 50,000 * .99 * 30! Holy cow we will be rich!” The .99 cents come from the lowest app price and the 30 is days at number 1. What does this magical equation equal? $1,485,000.00, yeah that is a good some of money! So who is ready to make a number 1 app with me? Not so fast.

Now this leads me into the lessons we learned in 2009. Though we have learned much I am going to point out 3 do’s and don’ts for 2010. Lets start with the don’ts.

“The Do Nots”

1. NO FREE APPS from developers! Really what is .99 cents to you?

Yes it can add up, but would you pay .99 cents for 5 minutes of peace or fun? Would you pay .99 cents for a 30 minute babysitter or a quite 3 hour car ride? Yes I think we all would. The fact that there are free apps is horrible for the consumers. Why? Simple, if good developers can’t make money on apps then they will leave the App Store thus the consumer is left with junk.

Apple does not offer refunds on apps and thus developers feel that they have to have free apps to build trust, but I counter this with the fact that when a new restaurant opens up on the corner they don’t give you a free meal. There maybe some type of deal you can get, but free won’t be one of them. If you don’t like the fo

od or service you won’t go back and you will tell at least 10 people not to go there, the same will happen in the App Store.

If you download an app from a developer for .99 cents and then you dislike it, I doubt you will ever download one from them again. On the flip side if you do like it and they come out with an app for $2.99 you will be more prone to download it based on a great experience. Even free demo apps need to stop. Again the basic truth to free or demo apps is free doesn’t pay the bills and developers have bills.

2. Change the ADS! The way ads are placed in apps don’t work, they are annoying and money is not being made on them. Apps are not websites. We have learned that people just won’t race around the race track and then click on an ad about Movies. Ads need to change to sponsorships. Now a few apps have started this like the ESPN Sports Center app did. Each time you loaded the app you would see a loading screen with a simple little ‘ad’ and a message that allowed you to view more about the ad while still staying in the app. With this we are simply ‘branding’ inside of these apps and not running ‘ads’. Apps can also receive sponsorship monies and then design these sponsorships into the apps, much like TV shows have done. Product placement will be key. A Pepsi race car or Gator Hawk armor on your fighting character. If ads are more ‘sneakily’ placed in the apps, then developers can sell the app for .99 cents and make additional revenues on the app for free updates in the future and a stronger company for developing even more apps! This is how ads will work or should I say, make money in the apps place in the App Store.

3. Don’t wait to market your app until it is in the the App Store. What? The first thought is to keep your app a secret and then launch it and watch the millions of downloads pour in. This is just not the case. I will compare this to Hollywood and to the launch of any movie. When is the last time that you went to the movie theater and didn’t see a see a preview for movies coming in the next 6 months? Now if you were late that is one thing! Hollywood knows that they need to create a ‘buzz’ about a movie long before it is ever ready to be released. Do you think that they are worried that someone is going to take the movie idea, copy it and release it before they do? Not likely.

That is the number 1 fear of any development company and plainly it just isn’t the case. Your buzz marketing is key, you create the buzz even if they do copy you all they are able to do it look like the ‘copy cat’ and no one likes a copy cat! You have got to get the buzz out about your next app fast and quickly. Now use common sense, just like a movie you can’t get buzz out without some content, some type of preview to show. Even if that preview is just detailed drawings, it may be enough. That is a call you will have to make.

With this said now lets review the do’s for 2010.

“The Do’s”

1. Create a plan. Plan and then plan again. One of the biggest issues with apps is forgetting or not including features that are key to success. One example is an idea I had for a parking app. It was very simple, I got a parking ticket parking in downtown 2 hour parking. I spaced the time and got a ticket. I had my iPhone in my hand and thought why couldn’t you have told me to move my car? Well there you have it, ‘Meter Mate’. I had one of the developers push it out in a few days and we didn’t plan it out at all, launched it in the app store and wham we got thousands of downloads, but we had even more feature requests in within weeks there was an app ‘Meter Maid’ that came out and had all the features we did not. This app hit the top 25 and was featured by Apple. Lesson learned, PLAN YOUR APPS! Take the time to review them, plan them and review them again. Get feedback on your plan by people outside those working on it! This is hands down the #1 rule in any development, but in this new frontier of iPhone Apps it critical to put aside speed and plan.

2. Now we move to features. This plays a little into planning, but is more based on the understanding that your apps don’t need to have everything what they need to have is the potential to grow. Meaning you need apps that you can update and update in a timely manor. When you place your app in the App Store it has only days to stand out and thus not everyone will know about it. Each time you update it you remind those that have the app on their devices to; A. Use it and B. Share it. Your “downloaders” are your best marketers, but they won’t market for you if you aren’t marketing to them. In your planning stage just simply hold back on a few features and then listen to your users feedback on your first app version. Adding a few of their suggestions to your app will make you look like a king and thus they will feel like they are part of your ‘team’. Updates are a great way to show your users that your company is still on it’s feet and when your new app comes out they are more connected with you then ever.

3. Data, data, data. If I could say one perfect helper in the world of marketing it would be ‘raw data’. Gathering data of any type will help you in both your current app and all future apps you plan to develop. I am not just talking about names and emails, but usage data. How many times a day are users using your apps? How long on are they on them? Do they share your apps? What type of device to they use your apps on? This type of data will prove invaluable when planning your next app or updates. With data comes communication with your users. Not only through the app, but finding ways to communicate with them in other medias as well. For example a Facebook page, Twitter or your own website. Even if you only get a few hundred fans those few will speak for the thousands that have your app.

2009 was a fast year in the world of the iPhone and App Store with no sign of slowing down, just changing. Changing in a way that can’t be predicted, but what we can do is learn from the mistakes of others and ourselves.
