You don’t, you can’t, you just shouldn’t

Why such a negative title? I have a strong point to make and sometimes adding a bit of negativity to your message helps send the message home. I get asked often how to create the perfect advertising campaign. At a lunch, in a meeting or at a business conference I will be asked, “How do I create a successful advertising campaign?”  My reply is short, simple and to the point, “You don’t.” That is right you do not create a successful or... Read More

365 copies and counting… they hope

I came across an article about the new GQ iPad magazine app from Appleinsider.com and it got me thinking.  The article focuses on the fact that GQ has only sold 365 copies of their iPad magazine in a month and a half since the iPad has been out.  Wow!  Out of a million plus possible consumers GQ has only managed to get 365 downloads, really?  Is this a sign that digital magazines are doomed?  Not even close. My favorite piece from the article... Read More

Your new mentor is 6 years old

The Boy Scouts of America have a motto that all business owners need to live by, that motto is “Be Prepared”. A simple little statement that can profoundly impact the future of all tried endeavors. The boy scouts are always prepared with first aid kits, water, extra socks and so on. They look to be prepared for emergencies, but when you look deeper into the principle of ‘being prepared’ you will see that it isn’t just about emergencies. In... Read More

The Dinosaurs are not extinct yet!

With all the hype about social ‘this and that’, websites and portable digital media, have we just abandoned talking about all ‘traditional’ forms of distribution and media?  I am referencing that big square box called your TV and about those print newspapers and magazines you have lying around.  It seems the only reason people will talk about the ‘big box’ is if it has to do with 3-D technology.  Or the only reason print is mentioned... Read More

Do you have your “Social Space”?

After 17 years of running businesses I have always marveled at the fact that we need to name everything in the business world.  We have to give everything a three letter abbreviation or we have to create a buzz word for something that no one really gets, but heck if it has a catchy phrase, then by all mean it has to work! I do admit some of the names are so catchy that even I throw them out there.  Like Web 2.0 or SERP ( Search Engine Results Positioning... Read More

Your best customer was once your worst

The old saying a picture is worth a thousand words has helped photographers and visual artists for centuries.  Now I want to introduce to you a saying that will profit you thousands of dollars and help you successfully grow your business for the years to come.  ”Your mistakes will make you rich, if you but admit to them.” Simple enough right? Wrong, trick question there.  This is perhaps the hardest lesson to learn in business and... Read More

So you want your own reality TV show, just join FourSquare.

Everyone seems to want everyone to know everything about anything they are doing all the time.  ( Follow that? ) Me however, not so much.  Let me be the first to say that I am a social media junkie, but there is a limit to the junk. I also preach that businesses will benefit and profit from social medias like FaceBook and Twitter, but again there is a limit to how they accomplish this.  We are getting very close to what I am see as the danger... Read More

Keep it simple and save a tree

In reading one of Seth Godin’s blogs and seeing this on the New York Times AND after a network luncheon this afternoon, I couldn’t shut my brain off about content. Yes content. Take a look at the links, I want to take this a little different direction on this. Why is it that we, business owners, think we need to say so much about what we do? It is fine to talk while networking or elaborate in a speech, but when we are sharing our message about... Read More

Are you marketing enough, my guess is a big NO!

Sure you run some ads in your local paper, have a radio spot and have that awesome advertisement on TV, but have you marketed lately? Here is my marketing tip of the week, “Get out and know them.”  Get out and know your customers.  I don’t care if you are a CEO of a fortune 500 company or just starting a company, you need to take a ‘time out’ from your day to day and get to know the people you so ‘nicely’ want to slam your... Read More
